A Republican, she was also the first US senator from Texas to be come under criminal indictment. Hutchison was acquitted from accusations of official misconduct and records tampering in 1994.
Sen. Hutchison announced in January 2011 that she is not running for re-election in 2012, after she failed to secure a nomination for governor in a three-way Republican primary in 2010, where Gov. Rick Perry emerged successful. She will have served in the US Senate for 19 years when her term expires.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison defends Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain from sexual harassment allegations and refused to retract criticisms she hurled against Texas Gov. Rick Perry earlier. Hutchison accused Perry of participating in “good old boy, backroom politics” and questioned the latter’s seemingly soft approach on illegal immigration during the 2010 Republican primary in Texas, which Perry won. On the sexual allegations against Cain, Hutchison questions the credibility of anonymous sources and challenged those making the accusations to come out.
Sen. Kay Hutchison Applauds Passing of “Minibus” Bill
Sen. Kay Hutchison (R-Texas) has lauded the passage of a bill appropriating funds for enhancing the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC); dubbed as the “Minibus” legislation. According to the bill, about $10 million will be allotted for the expansion of EPIC, which supports interdiction effort against drug and human trafficking, violence, and counterterrorism. In a statement, Sen. Hutchison said: “EPIC is one of the nation’s premier centers for tactical operational intelligence. This bill helps the facility continue to serve our state and our nation.”
Hutchison Joins Meryl Streep in Overseeing National Women’s History Museum Project
Sen. Kay Hutchinson joined Hollywood actress Meryl Streep as the latter visited Washington to oversee the building of a National Women’s History Museum on the National mall. Streep and Hutchinson, along with female politicians that include Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Sen. Susan Collins, and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, attended the inaugural Christine de Pizan Honors Gala, which is hosted by the non-profit organization behind the museum in the works. Hutchison on Streep: “I think she is the actress of our time and that she would lend herself to do this will take us a long way toward having success.”
